Children with parents with bipolar
There are some children who may feel embarrassed, alone or angry with the poor understanding surrounding mental illness in their community. For some children not knowing who or where to turn to can cause a high level of emotional stress.
There are a number of organisations in Australia that are dedicated to helping families whose parent/s have been diagnosed with a mental illness. The one thing to note is that you are not alone and there are many organisations in Australia that can provide advice for seeking specialised resources, through to providing practical advice.
For example, one organisation in particular is COMIC (Children of Mentally Ill Consumers/parents) who have developed a Supporting Our Family Kit. The aim of the Kit is to heighten awareness for children's issues and to de-stigmatise mental illness within the community. It hopes to encourage parents to ask for help and discuss their illness with their children. Download it here.
